Environmental activists stage a rally against the mining industry and its effect on local communities, as Asian mining officials hold a conference in Manila on October 14, 2008. Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) senior officials and executives began a meeting in the Philippine capital on October 13 during which they will hold consultations with counterparts from China, Japan, and South Korea. One analyst said that despite an economic slowdown and possible recession in the West due to a financial crisis, robust growth is forecast for emerging and developing countries, including China and India.
