LIFE IN THE SLUMS
by Bogdan Dinca
Pune is considered one of the most developed cities in India. Many foreign IT companies made major investments and during the last five years the city began to gain a modern look. The fast development of the city also meant a growth in the number of people living here. From 2.5 millions in 2001, Pune is home for about 5 millions people in 2008. More than 40% of them live in the slums, according to estimations of local NGOs. There are no real official statistics, because the dynamic of the slum dwellers is high.
Punes slum population is scattered across the whole city. A 2002 statistics mention 503 slums, from which 384 are recognized as being legal.
