SYRIA-CONFLICT-ARCHAEOLOGY

This combination of handout pictures provided on December 23, 2014 by UNITAR-UNOSAT shows close-ups of satellite-detected images of the archaeological site of Dura-Europos near the western Syrian village of Salhieh on September 4, 2011 (L) and on on April 2, 2014 (R) resulting from the ongoing conflict. Nearly 300 cultural heritage sites have been destroyed, damaged and looted in Syria since its conflict broke out in 2011, the UN said on December 23, 2014 in a report citing satellite evidence. Detailed analysis of satellite imagery of 290 locations at these sites showed 24 of them had been destroyed, 104 severely damaged, 85 moderately damaged and 77 possibly damaged.
