Some thousand people including ecologists, politicians and fishermen protest against reported toxic waste dumpage on October 24, 2009 in Amantea, in the southern Italian region of Calabria. On September 12, Italian authorities discovered a ship that was sunk by the mafia off the coast of southern Italy with 120 barrels of radioactive waste on board. It is one of 32 vessels carrying toxic material that has been sunk by the mafia in the Mediterranean, according to the prosecutor's office in Reggio Calabria. AFP PHOTO/CONTROLUCE/MARIO TOSTI
